The Part Of The Deck People Lean On
A guard rail is the only part of a deck that has a person’s full weight thrown against it sideways, and it is the part most often built as an afterthought. Code here requires a residential guard at 36 inches minimum, 42 inches on most elevated and commercial work, with no gap anywhere in it that a 4-inch sphere will pass through, and the whole assembly has to resist a 200 pound concentrated load applied in any direction at the top. That last requirement is what the posts and their connections have to deliver, and it is why a rail that was simply screwed to the outside of a rim joist will eventually flex, then wobble, then let go. Stairs come with the same scrutiny: consistent riser height, consistent tread depth, a graspable handrail at the right height, and a stringer that actually carries the flight. Nothing about the visible style changes any of that. Cable and glass are popular here for the obvious reason, which is that they preserve a view, and both need the posts and base connections engineered rather than assumed. Why Have Us Build The Rail
A wobbly guard is not a cosmetic complaint, it is the warning that comes before somebody goes over it, and it is nearly always a post connection rather than the rail itself. We build the connection first: blocking behind the rim, through-bolted posts with tension hardware rather than lag screws into end grain, and a load check at the top of each post before we call it finished. On cable we set the tension correctly and use enough intermediate posts that the runs do not deflect past the gap limit, which is the single most common failure on cheap cable installs. On glass we size the base shoes and get the panels made to the opening. And on stairs we take the trouble to keep every riser within an eighth of an inch of every other, because inconsistent risers are how people fall.

Reasons To Replace A Railing
Guard rails give plenty of warning. The ones worth acting on:
It moves when you lean on it
The clearest signal there is, and the most urgent on anything elevated. Movement means the post connection has failed or was never adequate, and the rail is no longer doing the job it exists for.
The gaps are too wide
Older decks were often built before the 4-inch sphere rule, and rails with 5 or 6 inch gaps are common on the Westside. If there are small children in the house that is not a code footnote, it is the reason to replace it now.
The height is short
Guards built to older standards, or built without a permit, frequently sit at 30 to 34 inches. Anything elevated should be at 42 inches, and that gets checked if you ever sell or refinance.
The posts are rotting at the base
Water sits where the post meets the surface and works down into the end grain. Soft wood at that point means the connection is compromised even if the rail still feels solid today.
You want the view back
A timber rail with closely spaced spindles stripes the horizon from every seat on the deck. Cable and glass are why so many Palisades, Brentwood and Beverly Hills rails get replaced while still structurally sound.
You need privacy or a gate
Overlooking neighbours, a pool enclosure requirement, or small children and a drop all get solved at the rail line with a screen, a louvred panel or a self-closing gate.

How A Railing Job Runs
Two to five days on most decks, depending on the material and whether the posts have to come out.
1. Inspection and measure
We check every post connection, probe for rot at the bases and inside the rim joist, measure heights and gaps against current code, and establish whether the existing posts can be reused or have to be replaced.
2. Material and design
Timber, composite, powder-coated steel, stainless cable or structural glass, with the trade-offs laid out plainly: sight lines, maintenance, cost and how each one behaves in salt air. Gates, screens and any lighting get decided at the same time.
3. Posts and structure
Blocking added behind the rim, posts through-bolted with the right tension hardware, and any rotten timber cut out and replaced. This is the part that determines whether the rail passes a load test.
4. Rails, infill and finish
Top and bottom rails, then the infill: spindles, cable runs tensioned to specification, or glass panels set into their shoes. Then gates, handrails on the stairs, any lighting, and a load check before we leave.
Rail Types, Stairs And Gates
The options and what each one is actually good at:
Wood railings
Redwood, cedar and pressure treated remain the most common and the least expensive, they match a timber deck naturally, and any component can be replaced individually. They need the same clean and coat cycle as the deck surface, and they block more of the view than any other option.
Composite railings
Matched systems from the decking manufacturers, with no coating ever required and a warranty running alongside the boards. They are heavier-looking than cable or glass and cost more than timber, and they are the low-maintenance default on a composite deck.
Stainless cable railings
Horizontal stainless cable in timber or metal posts, which keeps a view almost completely open. Correct tension and enough intermediate posts are what stop the cables deflecting past the gap limit when somebody pushes on them. Stainless is essential near the ocean.
Glass railings
Tempered or laminated panels in a base shoe or in posts, giving the clearest view and a wind break with it. They have to meet the same height and load requirements as any other guard, and they need cleaning, which near the beach means often.
Deck stairs
Stringers sized and supported to carry the flight, risers consistent within an eighth of an inch, treads deep enough to stand on properly, and a graspable handrail at the required height. Stairs are where most deck injuries happen and consistency is what prevents them.
Deck gates
Self-closing and self-latching hardware for pool enclosures, plain gates for pets and children, and matched infill so a gate does not read as an afterthought. Pool gates are checked against the barrier rules at inspection.
Privacy screens
Slatted, louvred or trellis panels at the rail line that block a specific sight line without fencing the whole deck in. Height limits vary by city, so the screen is designed against the local rule rather than to the height that feels right.
Railing and stair lighting
Low-voltage LED in the post caps, under the top rail and in the stair risers. It makes the deck usable after dark and takes the stairs out of the hazard category. The wiring is easiest to run while the rail is apart.
What Deck Railing Costs
Railing is priced by linear foot and the material spread is wide, from timber at the bottom to structural glass at the top. What moves it:
- Material. Pressure treated and composite are the least expensive per foot, timber hardwood above them, stainless cable higher again, and glass the most.
- Linear footage, including every stair flight, which costs more per foot than a straight run.
- Whether the posts can be reused. Sound posts save a great deal; rotten ones mean opening up the deck edge and adding blocking.
- Post spacing. Cable in particular needs closer intermediate posts than a spindle rail to hold tension and meet the gap limit.
- Gates. Self-closing pool enclosure hardware costs more than a simple garden gate and it is checked at inspection.
- Lighting. Low-voltage runs in the posts and stair risers add a transformer, cabling and labour while the rail is open.
- Height changes. Bringing an old 34-inch guard up to 42 inches often means new posts throughout rather than a taller top rail.

Why does my railing wobble?
Almost always the post connection rather than the rail. The usual cause is posts fastened to the outside of the rim joist with lag screws, which puts the load into end grain and works loose over time, or rot at the base of the post where water sits. The fix is blocking behind the rim, through-bolted posts with tension hardware, and replacing any timber that has softened. It is not a job to defer on an elevated deck.
Can you replace just the railing?
Yes, and it is common. If the deck framing and surface are sound but the guard is short, wide-gapped or wobbly, replacing the rail alone is a fraction of a rebuild and brings the deck up to current code. What we check first is the rim joist and the post bases, because a new rail bolted to failing timber is a new rail that will fail.
Do you build pool gates?
Yes. Pool enclosure rules cover barrier height, self-closing and self-latching hardware, latch height and the maximum gap anywhere in the barrier, and all of it is checked at inspection. We build gates that match the surrounding rail rather than bolting on something that looks like an afterthought, and we make sure the assembly actually complies.
Does cable railing need much maintenance?
Near the ocean, some. Stainless cable is the right specification within a mile of the water and it still benefits from a wash to remove salt film. Tension should be checked roughly annually, since cables relax slightly over the first year and any deflection past the gap limit matters. Timber posts in a cable system need the same clean and coat cycle as the rest of the deck.
