Handrails Done Right

Custom handrails for new builds, retrofits, and code corrections. We design and install cable, glass, aluminum, and wood railing systems on decks, stairs, balconies, and porches across Santa Monica. Every railing meets the 42" guard height and 4" sphere rule, and we use coastal-grade stainless hardware on every coastal install.

How We Work

From the first site walk to final hand-over, one project manager runs the whole job.

1. Measure and style

We walk the deck or stair run, take measurements, and bring real samples — cable spools, glass thickness samples, wood and aluminum finish chips — so you can pick in your actual light.

2. Engineered layout

Post spacing, anchor points, and load calculations match the railing system. Glass and cable systems get engineered drawings where the city requires them.

3. Precision install

Crew sets posts plumb to 1/16″, tensions cable to spec, sets glass with structural standoffs, and caps everything to a finished look. Code inspection and walk-through before sign-off.

When You Need Handrails

A handrail upgrade is the right call when:

  • The current railing wobbles — loose post connections are a real fall hazard, especially on elevated decks.
  • You want an unobstructed view — cable and glass railings keep the ocean view open from the deck.
  • An inspector flagged the height or spacing — older railings sometimes fail the 42″ or 4″ sphere rule on resale inspections.
  • The wood is checked, splintered, or rotted — wood handrails take the worst of the sun. A retrofit refreshes the deck without rebuilding it.
  • You’re adding stairs or a landing — every new stair run over 30″ needs a continuous, code-compliant handrail.
  • The HOA or coastal-zone permit requires it — some HOAs and Santa Monica’s coastal overlay zones spec railing material — we’ll match the requirement.

What Affects the Cost of Handrails

Handrail pricing is per linear foot. The number depends on:

  • System type. Wood is cheapest per foot. Aluminum picket and powder-coated steel are mid-tier. Cable is mid-to-high. Glass is the most expensive.
  • Linear footage. Short stair runs cost more per foot than long deck perimeters because of post-setting overhead.
  • Post material. Wood posts are the cheapest. Stainless and powder-coated aluminum posts add cost but resist coastal corrosion.
  • Anchor method. Surface-mount on a finished deck is fastest. Through-bolted into framing or core-drilled into concrete adds labor.
  • Lighting. Integrated post-cap lights and stair lights add electrical work to the install.
  • Engineering and permit. Glass and high-load cable systems sometimes need engineered drawings — included in our quote where required.

We quote railing as a separate flat line item on every project — easy to compare apples to apples.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a handrail install take?

Most railing-only jobs are done in 1–3 days once material is on site. Cable systems usually finish in a day; glass takes longer because of the lead time on tempered panels.

Will cable railings sag over time?

Not if they’re tensioned correctly and re-tensioned once after the first season. We use marine-grade stainless cable and through-bolted posts on every coastal install so the system holds spec for 20+ years.

Do you handle code compliance?

Yes — every railing we install meets the 42″ guard height, the 4″ sphere rule, and graspability requirements for hand-rails on stairs. We also handle the inspection sign-off.

Can you upgrade the railing on an existing deck without replacing the deck?

Almost always. We can pull the old top rail and pickets and set new posts into the existing framing if the framing is sound. We inspect first and confirm.

What's the maintenance on cable vs glass vs wood?

Cable: re-tension once a year. Glass: hose off as needed. Wood: re-stain every 2–3 years. Aluminum: hose off — that’s it.
